Little Big Planet 2 – (week 16)

I had begun numerous Top-Down-Shooter projects with various themes and mechanics, but never finding the passion to really develop them. But then one day I was in a barbarian mood (probably from reading Lord of the Rings) and I created a little guy shooting arrows at goblins and pigs. Then I developed it by adding axtra weapons like swords and spears, and extra enemies like Oliphaunts and a boss dragon. It quickly grew from a simple concept to a decent minigame to a short level. I never expected “barbarian” to be the theme that would interest me most in a top-down-shooter.

The game starts on a farm and your only weapon is your fists. From there, you can travel to the valley to fight off a goblin raid, go to the cemetary to fight zombies, or (my personal favourite) head over to the colliseum and fight endless waves of enemies. As you progress you fight increasingly difficult opponents and as your score increases you unlock extra weapons and more powerful weapons until (sometimes) the colliseum can’t spit out enemies fast enough.

The first weapon you unlock is an arrow, then later you get a sword, then a spear, then two extra arrows. By 50,000 points you’re simultaeneously shooting/throwing/creating 5 arrows, 2 swords, 2 spears, 5 enemy-seeking buzzsaw chakrams, a pack of 4 wolves, 7 Grey Host (the ghost-soldiers from Lord of the Rings) and a beam of Balefire (from Wheel of Time) all while continuing to punch with your bare fists. He’s a very talented barbarian.

By 80,000 points Death shows up and just follows you around because he figures he’ll save time that way.

Eve

Genesis is one of those books I tend to go back to more out of an interest in the creation of the cosmos. But occasionally I go back there out of a need to analyze and understand God’s
original intentions when He invented human relationships. I was unexpectedly struck by a new thought as I read it recently, and I wanna share it with you.
The scripture I got this from was Genesis 2:18-24.

God had made all the animals and had made the man Adam in His image. But God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (verse 18) God saw that Adam needed a companion, and not just a companion but a suitable companion. God also saw that nothing He had already made would suffice. He presented all of the animals to Adam but no suitable helper was found. (verse 20)

There are some scholars who believe that before Eve, God had presented a number of other female humans to Adam to see if any of them were suitable for him. There’s speculation as to the exact nature of these females and how they were made, but they would’ve been made differently than Eve, which is probably why they were unsuitable.

God decided He would make a female human out of one of Adam’s ribs. When Adam saw her he said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” (verses 21-23)

Eve was a different kind of companion entirely, because she was a part of Adam. The very next verse states, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (verse 24) Polygamy is the nature of the animal
kingdom – it’s what works best for them – and perhaps Polygamy was going to be for the humans as well, if Adam would’ve found the previous females suitable (I don’t know if that’s the case). But the only suitable companion for Adam was someone who was a part of him, it appears that for that specific reason a more intimate system was required, one that didn’t involve “packs” of humans but the start of new families, and lovers in monogymous relationships becoming “one flesh”, because man and woman were originally one flesh to begin with.

No creatures in the animal kingdom have that kind of deep spiritual connection. They don’t really need it. Only humans bear God’s image, and because of that we need something more than just social activity – we need relationships – we need commitment – we need intimacy.

I don’t know if there was ever such a thing as “alternative human females” before Eve was created. But I know Adam was alone for a time, and that God saw that it wasn’t good.

I expect that God knew from the beginning that Eve would be necessary, and that He allowed this time of searching for Adam because without that experience he wouldn’t have understood why Eve alone could satisfy his relational needs. Had she been presented to him in that manner right away he may have always wondered, as people often do, what he was missing. Having spent all that time searching and finding nothing, his appreciation when he finally met Eve would’ve been much more complete.

Book Launch

The launch of my first book “The Kingdom” will take place at Faith Family Books in Scarborough, Ontario on May 19th!

I’ll be there between 5:30 and 8:30 PM signing books, and doing a short reading at 6:30.

I’m still fairly new at doing events like this, and not yet accustomed to public speaking, so this’ll be quite an adventure for me.

I gotta get used to it sometime. 🙂

Lego Star Wars: The Video Game – (a review)

This is sort of a combined review of the first Lego Star Wars: The Video Game, Lego Star Wars II and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga. It turned out to be quite long, so make yourself comfortable. 🙂

I wasn’t expecting much from this series. I think the reason I gave in was a combination of hearing so much praise about it and finding it on-sale. Up until then, Lego video games had been consistently terrible, otherwise I would’ve jumped at the opportunity to control a Lego Darth Maul right away.

What struck me about the first game was not that it was “expertly” crafted or precise, but somehow it didn’t need to be. In most games we demand a certain amount of precision in the controls and hit-detection, but in this game it really didn’t matter, which was probably a result of it being so darn cute, and having infinite lives.

It’s a franchise with a very…relaxing level of difficulty. But with enough unlockable extras like characters and vehicles and “cheats” that you still feel like you’re working to earn stuff. It was the perfect game for me to play just as I came down with a cold because I didn’t have the energy for anything rigorous but still felt like I was being productive.

Starting with the second game, the “cheats” took on a different dynamic. There was more of them, they were cheaper, and a lot of them had to do with enhancing specific powers. Adding to that the fact that they were usable even in your first run through Story Mode, and the “cheats” took on the feeling of an RPG element – which created a lot of additional replay value. Even after unlocking everything in the game, I’ve found it so much fun to start a new file and do it all over again.

The second game also introduced Character Creation to the series, which of course made my mind salivate. I wasn’t quite able to make a Lego version of my ultimate Sith character, but I made a decent old, haggard, Lego Jedi.

A part of me wishes I hadn’t played the first two games, and just got the Complete Saga and started with that. It has pretty much all the content of the first two games mixed into one package allowing all the characters of both games to interact with eachother. (Except Yoda doesn’t hop around like crazy like he did in the first game – I miss that.)

Since then they’ve made Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Batman games, but both of them fall short of the freedom of creativity of the Star Wars games. Batman in particular has extremely specific ways of getting through each level, meaning that even in Free Play mode (where you can play as any character you want) you still have to switch to specific characters constantly in order to progress through the level, which removes a lot of the sense of freedom that Free Play mode is meant create. Other reviewers didn’t seem as bothered by it as I was, but there it is. In the Star Wars games I could identify levels that were Force-heavy and levels that were Blaster-heavy, and knew that I could play as any character from those categories and get through the level without having to switch too much. That didn’t exist in the Batman game.

These are games that I find fascinating to play with a variety of people. For something that seems so simple, nobody plays it the exact same way. Some people prefer Lightsabers and Force powers, some prefer blasting everything, some compete to collect all the studs, some are constantly trying to kill me. I never knew my mother was so viscious when you put a gun in her hand! And the ease of difficulty means you can play it with just about anybody – even people who are most often intimidated by video games.

There’s little in these games for parents to be concerned about. Even characters that are normally sexy have all been Lego-nized. Slave Princess Leia does a little dance when you press the action button, but she’s not exactly curvacious. People fall apart when they die, but without blood or guts. Some might be concerned that in Free Play mode there are certain areas that cannot be accessed without using “The Dark Side” of the Force, but apart from the red colours, there’s no actual difference in the game between using that and “Good” Force.

These games are the kind of games that I really could’ve used as a kid. Even without the Star Wars name, just the design of the difficulty setting, the drop-in-drop-out multiplayer feature, the freedom of creativity… Back when my autism was more severe, I tended to feel inadequate and out-of-place in most social situations. Video games brought me to a world where I and the person I played with were on the same level. But so few games are as welcoming to such a broad range of individuals as these Lego games.

Now Lego Star Wars III is out. But I’m waiting to buy it until I come down with another cold or something. That’s how I’ll always remember these games – as comfort games. Something to make me feel productive while I can’t be bothered doing anything energetic. Only Lego Pirates of the Carribean is coming out in less than a month. So I’m gonna have to get sick twice in a very short amount of time…

Anybody want a hug???

Practicality

When you think about it, eating the giant Peanut M&M guy wouldn’t be that great. Once you get past that one layer of chocolate you’d just be eating a giant chunk of peanut. It’d be enough to live off of for a while but it wouldn’t taste all that great.

The Kingdom

Okay, I’ve been quiet long enough. It’s time to let you all know what I’ve been up to lately.

Last year I entered a work of mine into the Word Alive Press writing contest and received an Honourable Mention. Since last fall I’ve been working with Word Alive Press to prepare the manuscript for publication, and now The Kingdom is finally avialable!

The Kingdom. Short Fantasy Novel by Benjamin T. Collier

This was a piece I began writing in 2006 after an unexpected wake up call from God. A new message had been put on my heart, and I was inspired to write a fantasy novella. But for years I couldn’t find a home for it, until Word Alive Press saw something in this story and decided they wanted to publish it.

I had a lunch & reading gig recently with friends and family, to celebrate the publication and get some pre-orders. Everyone was very supportive. Now that publishing is done it’s time for me to shift into Promoting phase.

In that spirit, you can now find my book at the following sites…

Bound For Glory: http://astore.amazon.ca/boundforglorybooks-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=27

The cost is normally $12.99 Canadian, but you find a sale at certain stores.
I’ll let you know when EBook editions will be available.

I’ve got my copy nestled right next to my 1966 edition of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This is not the first book I’ve written, but it is the first one to receive publication (hopefully of many). I had written two full-length novels and gotten some feedback from people in the writing industry before I started writing The Kingdom. It’s the first piece that I began after developing my craft, which definitely shows when I compare it to my previous works. I still want to get those pieces published as well someday, but I’ll need to get cracking revising them before they’ll be ready. I also have several other ideas in various stages of development. It’ll be interesting to see where God takes me from here.

I have to warn you guys that this book contains some mature content, so if you’re thinking of getting it for your kids then I would strongly recommend reading it yourself first and then discerning whether or not your kids are ready for it.

I hope you check it out, and I hope you enjoy it. 🙂

God bless, guys,
